Harmony at the Heart of Beaver Island

TUNES Music Makers provides accessible, high-quality music education and creative opportunities to the Beaver Island community, with a special focus on improving the mental health and well-being of both young people and older adults. By fostering creativity, building confidence, and strengthening social connections across generations, we enrich lives while preserving the island’s unique musical heritage. Our mission is to ensure that every member of our community—regardless of age, background, or financial situation—can experience the transformative power of music as a tool for personal growth, emotional wellness, and cultural continuity.

Music Lessons for Every Age—With Youth at the Center

We believe every young person on Beaver Island deserves access to music—regardless of finances. That’s why TUNES Music Makers offers scholarships to support lessons and music education opportunities, funded entirely through private donations and fundraising.

Lessons run in 12-week sessions. Before each session begins, we review registrations and award scholarships based on need and available funding. To stay true to our mission and serve the community responsibly, we prioritize scholarships for school-aged students first, followed by senior citizens, and then adults if funding remains.

And in gratitude for their service: Veterans receive music lessons at no cost.

If you are interested in lessons, we encourage you to apply under Registration.

Stop by TUNES this Halloween to see our small but mighty studio, enjoy some cider and a sweet treat, and say hello! We’ll have treat bags ready for trick-or-treaters, too.

Everyone is welcome. We’d love to see you! 🎃

Today begins our 2nd through 6th grade fiddle program at Beaver Island Community School with Ruby John Music at the helm. This is Ruby’s third school year as artist-in-residence.

We are so grateful that BICS has partnered with us to bring this unique opportunity to Beaver Island – made possible, in part, by an Arts & Culture grant from Charlevoix County Community Foundation.

A heartfelt thanks to Ruby for her commitment to our programming and to her students. The logistics of traveling back and forth to Beaver Island aren’t always ideal – but the love of what she does shines through as she continues her commitment to enriching the lives of island children through music.

Welcome back, Ruby! 🎶 🎻

🎻 You often ask us, “Is there anything TUNES needs?”

Thankfully, we often have everything we need to give our young musicians the best advantage to learn. But we finally have a need!

We’re looking for two 3/4-size Franz Hoffmann Amadeus violins from SHAR Music for two young musicians.

If you’d like to help put a violin into one of these young musicians’ hands, we’d love to hear from you. Thank you for helping make music possible! 💚
