The 2024 Geographic Enrichment Grant from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation made it possible for us to bring Ruby John to Beaver Island to work with our K–6 students during the winter and spring. Watching her connect with these kids has been nothing short of amazing.

Ruby brings so many gifts to our program, but her biggest one is her heart. She believes in what we’re doing here, and it shines through in every interaction—with patience, kindness, and an ability to make each child feel seen and supported.

Watching one of the class sessions yesterday, it was clear these students were learning so much more than how to hold a fiddle. They were learning rhythm, timing, how to listen and stay in sync with one another. They were learning confidence, focus, and teamwork.

We’re so grateful to CCCF for the grant funding, but it really just scratches the surface. There are many additional costs aside from just the lessons – travel, lodging, meals, strings, instruments, and repairs to name a few.

We want to give a huge thank you to Don & Amy Langford for their generous support in 2024. Their contributions helped make this K–6 fiddle program a reality. 👏
