Born out of a deep love for Beaver Islandโs musical heritage and a response to the lack of music education, our 501(c)(3) program opens doors for everyoneโfrom curious children to the young-at-heartโto explore, create, and connect through music. Here, learning an instrument is more than just lessons; itโs a journey of self-discovery, confidence, and joy shared with neighbors and friends. Tunes Music Makers believes in the power of music to uplift spirits, build bonds across generations, and keep the traditions that make Beaver Island unique alive for future generations.
Our Mission
Our mission is to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive musical community on Beaver Island, providing access to quality music education, fostering creativity and promoting social cohesion. We aim to enrich lives, inspire youth and celebrate the cultural heritage of our community, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to discover the transformative power of music.
Our current course offerings are:
Acoustic, electric and bass guitar, mandolin, piano, fiddle, ukulele, vocal, cello & banjo.
Tunes Music Makers has made a significant impact on the young people of Beaver Island. Weโve seen firsthand how music can transform lives, providing an outlet for expression, enhancing cognitive abilities, and building confidence and community. Our home at the Beaver Island Community Center has become a hub of musical activity, with students and tutors demonstrating their commitment to this program daily.

Beaver Island residents have an incredible chance to learn from one of the finest fiddlers in the region! From January through June 2025, Ruby John Music, a celebrated Traditional Fiddler and member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, will offer twice monthly, in-person, private fiddle lessons to students of all ages. Ruby will be traveling to the island twice monthly to teach at BICS and will have additional time to do lessons for the community.
Ruby brings a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching, making this a truly unique opportunity to explore the art of traditional fiddling. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, Rubyโs one-on-one lessons promise an unforgettable learning journey.
These lessons, organized as a collaborative effort by TUNES Music Makers & Ruby John. work toward our mission of preserving Beaver Islandโs musical traditions while fostering cross-cultural connections and creating unique opportunities in our rural community.
